Prof. Yoonchan Jeong received his PhD in 1999 from the School of Electrical Engineering, Seoul National University, Korea, for research in the area of fiber and nonlinear optics. He then held a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at the same university. He joined the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) at the University of Southampton in 2001 as a Research Fellow and became a Reader (Senior Faculty Position) in 2006. He returned to the School of Electrical Engineering, Seoul National University as a faculty member in 2010, where he is now a full professor.
His research interests cover a wide range of laser and photonics areas, including fiber/waveguide/quantum/ nonlinear optics, holography, 3-dimensional displays, and meta-surfaces. His work has resulted in over 300 publications, including patents, book contributions, and journal/conference papers.
He has served on various programme committees for international photonics conferences, including the Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications Conference (Optica, 2005-2006), Fiber Lasers VI: Technology, Systems and Applications (Laser Source Engineering, Photonics West, SPIE, 2008-2013), and the Advanced Solid-State Photonics (Optica, 2011-2016). He has also served as Associate Editor for Optics Express (Optica, 2009-2016) and Editor-in-Chief for Current Optics and Photonics (OSK, 2019-2022). He currently chairs the Laser Based Sensors Subcommittee of Optical Sensors (Optica, since 2015), and is a member of the steering committee for the AFL conference (since 2022) and the program committee of the ALPS conference (since 2022). He is a recipient of the Sinyang Engineering Awards in 2018 and a Fellow of Optica (formerly OSA).
